NTUA – National Technical University of Athens

NTUA is the supporting organization for EU-IBISBA in Greece, also the largest and oldest engineering university of the country. Its role would be to coordinate activities in process and business development as well as general access to experimental facilities available to target, research and innovate developments and processes in biocatalysis. The Industrial Process Systems Engineering Unit (IPSEN) coordinates contributions in business development, integrated process design, process intensification, additive manufacturing, optimization and modelling. The Industrial Biotechnology and Biocatalysis Group (IndBioCat) coordinates access to a wide range of experimental facilities that explore Industrial Biotechnology innovations for 2G biofuels, plastics and value-added chemicals. NTUA further coordinates access to thermal processes, membrane manufacturing and advanced materials development. The Industrial Process Systems Engineering Unit (IPSEN) is supported by the Process Analysis and Plant Design whereas the Industrial Biotechnology & Biocatalysis Group (IndBioCat) by the Department of Synthesis and Development of Industrial Processes.

NTUA/IPSEN coordinates functions in advanced process systems engineering including model-assisted tools for process integration, process synthesis and optimization, process flow sheeting, costing and model-assisted analysis of biorefineries and biorenewables. It is a certified unit for chemical plant design at all scales including pilot and demnostration facilities. Concerning business uptake, NTUA/IPSEN stands in charge of the National Technological Platfiorm for Sustainable Chemistry Greece (Suschem Greece) that represents 80%, of the industrial associations of the country. The broad mission of the SusChem NTP is set to promote business and the concept of circular economy, industrial symbiosis, industrial ecology, and advances in the bio-economy sector. NTUA/IPSEN shelters training activities whereas it is coordinating ITN Marie Curie projects in biorefinery design and integration. The Industrial Biotechnology & Biocatalysis Group (IndBioCat) is connected to national nodes that involve functions across a broad range of scientific fields that include protein engineering, recombinant DNA technology, biochemical engineering and biocatalysis.
