Wageningen University (WU) is an internationally leading education and research organisation and, with more than 6,000 employees. As such, it is the largest organisation in the Netherlands focusing on the non-medical life sciences and, in particular, on ‘sustainable biotechnology and sustainable systems for energy and products’. It does so by working closely together with governments and the business community. The WU ranks 59 overall in The Times Higher Education World University Ranking 2018 (best Dutch University) and the number one worldwide in Agricultural Sciences and Environment & Ecology (NT and QS world university rankings). Biobased economy research is a major focus, with various large research programmes, training and unique facilities, including those in the scope of IBISBA, namely UNLOCK, Algaeparc and ISBE-NL. The University has also set Systems & Synthetic Biology as one of its strategic spearheads, by establishment of the new Chair of Systems and Synthetic Biology 2010, the Wageningen Centre for Systems Biology & Synthetic (WCSB) in 2012, with groups from universities, research institutes and industry and launched a number of cross-departmental initiatives in areas related to Industrial Biotechnology and Synthetic Biology. The WU coordinates the research infrastructure UNLOCK, which focus on the use of microbial communities for industrial and other applications and which is on the Dutch NWO roadmap for RIs.
